Macbeth redux - from Joburg Theatre to you
Earlier this year an exciting ensemble of actors, working under the auspices of the Duma Ndlovu Academy (DNA) at the Joburg Theatre, workshopped an innovative multilingual production of Macbeth.
It was performed for small audiences in April, in anticipation of touring to schools in and around Gauteng. Unfortunately, as winter set in, a third Covid wave washed over South Africa and put these plans on hold.
The DNA ensemble now looks forward to sharing its magical Macbeth with school audiences and the general public once again. And as it prepares to do so, the Tsikinya-Chaka Centre is thrilled to be a partner!
In addition to supporting the development of this Macbeth as a touring show, the TCC’s partnership with the Joburg Theatre will enable an audio recording of the production. Furthermore, using documentary footage of rehearsals and discussions between the cast and creative team (including facilitators Jerry Mntonga, Michael Mazibuko and Sarah Roberts) the TCC and Joburg Theatre will curate a series of behind-the-scenes videos. These will be of interest to theatre makers, educators, learners, language activists and Shakespeare enthusiasts alike.
